Because of its pleasant middle mountain climate, Sampeyre is a highly frequented tourist centre that might be considered the "capital" of the Varaita Valley.
It shared the fate of the Margraviate of Saluzzo until the latter came under Savoyard rule in 1601. It had quite a number of liege lords, among them Gerolamo Vacca and the Margrave of Luserna (1622).
Of the original internal structures of the parish church of Saint Peter and Paul, dating from the 15th century, the portal with a soffit and a precious rosette have been preserved.
Sampeyre is a resort and the starting point for hikes and mountain climbing, such as the one to the Logge del Viso (3015m). The chair-lift is opened both in summer and in winter and takes you to the magnificent Sant’Anna Valley. The artificial lake is the destination for enthusiastic fishers. The centres of Rore and Becetto are very active in the fields of culture and tourism. Every year on the last Sunday of August the Cianto Viol takes place here, a stroll along the trails with traditional song and dance the whole day long.
The ethnographical museum is worth visiting.
