In this agricultural centre, surrounded by chestnut and deciduous forests, the delicious Tomin dal Mel, the valley’s distinctive cheese, is produced.
Sharing the fate of the Margraviate of Saluzzo Melle was given as a fief to varying liege lords, among them Bernabò Visconti. In 1601 it came under the rule of the Savoyards. In the 18th century it was divided up between the Paoletti of Tarantasca and the Roasenda. The ruins of the two castles are still present as well as a few remnants of medieval architecture in some houses of the village. The parish church of Saint John the Baptist was rebuilt in 1834 in neo-Baroque style.
Melle, home of the writer and drawer Tavio Cosio, is the ideal place to buy typical products, especially medicinal herbs.
